Approach
The aim is to understand each pupil’s needs and support them to close learning gaps, and achieve or exceed their potential. We offer a pupil-centred, total communication approach where BSL and spoken language are equally valued and encouraged. We believe this helps all pupils to develop their communication skills and progress in their learning. We provide pupils with the specialist support they need to grow into independent, confident deaf young people, able to interact and thrive.
Many of our pupils have additional needs e.g. ASD, ADHD, Motor Difficulties, Emotional and Behavioural Difficulties, etc. and require a differentiated curriculum and more intensive support to facilitate their learning. We adopt a flexible approach to ensure all pupils’ needs are met. Pupils are assessed on an individual basis and are allocated support accordingly. Depending on the pupil’s needs, there may be times where they are taught by a Teacher of the Deaf within the ARP and other times where they are supported by a member of the ARP in their mainstream classroom.
