Welcome to our Race and Social Justice Project
At Five Elms Primary, our vision is to provide an inclusive curriculum that aims to improve the experience, skills and attainment of all students. The school has 70% of children from different ethnic minorities, which include a growing Asian population and a consistent Eastern European population (mostly Romanian). White British and Black African children make up nearly half the school’s population (about 45%). About 40 languages are spoken within the school.
The school’s curriculum is designed, sequenced and delivered to ensure progression in knowledge, skills and understanding to clearly defined end points, allowing children to transfer key knowledge to long-term memory. Our Knowledge based curriculum focussing on vocabulary and concept acquisition. Topics link various areas of the curriculum to enable transference between subjects. The lessons taught are representative of the pupils and staff race, family structure, culture, religion, gender, abilities and disabilities. The voices of all the children and staff members are valued including those in protected characteristic groups, by ensuring that all students, regardless of background, are able to participate fully and achieve at equal rates.

Barking and Dagenham is one of London’s most diverse boroughs and we are proud to say that the staff of our school fully reflect the diversity in our local community. Participation in the LBBD Race and Social Justice Project has raised staff awareness and begun a professional dialogue in the school around these issues. Book diversity including core texts has begun to be addressed on an ongoing basis.

Reading For Pleasure and Core Texts within our Diverse Community
At Five Elms Primary, we have been proactive in making sure the books in our school library and classrooms reflect the community our children live in. We want all our pupils to feel valued and feel a real sense of belonging by seeing themselves in the books they read.
